Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – Junior Maya Arnott scored a career-high 28 points on 12-14 shooting and the Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team rolled past Case Western 95-64 on Sunday afternoon at the Field House.
Arnott also posted 10 rebounds in the win and has notched six double-doubles this season, while currently leading the UAA in field goal percentage (54.9) and rebounds per game (8.6).
With the victory, WashU improves to 5-3 in league play and 11-8 overall. CWRU falls 7-13, (2-7, UAA).
The Bears got after it on both ends right from the start, holding the Spartans to just 23 percent shooting in the first frame.
Arnott had the hot hand early, scoring the first eight points of the contest for WU. The New York, N.Y. native did not miss a single field goal attempt in the first half (7-7) and nearly posted a double-double with 18 points and six rebounds at the break.
After trailing 11-10, WashU went on a 15-0 run, giving the Bears a 13-point advantage at 24-11.
The Bears did a great job of sharing the basketball in the second quarter, finding open looks in transition both down in the paint and across the perimeter, as they started off the period shooting 7-7 from the field.
A driving layup from Karisa Grandison extended the Bears' lead out to 36-17. In total, the Bears shot 70 percent from the field in the second quarter.
WashU continued to pour it on, outscoring Case 34-17 in the period, forcing six Spartan turnovers.
Holding a 53-28 advantage at halftime, the Bears were in complete control.
Statistically, Case Western had its best shooting performance in the third quarter (52 percent), but WashU was able to maintain their large lead, as the Spartans were unable to cut it closer than 21 points.
Briefly in the fourth, CWRU cut the lead to 72-54, but the Bears responded with a 12-6 run to push the lead back to over 20 points after Brenna Loftus and Arnott scored on back-to-back layups.
The Bears' largest lead of the afternoon was late in the third quarter at 34 points (70-46) after an offensive put back from Loftus was successful.
Shooting 66 percent from the field in the fourth quarter (10-16), the Bears also produced nine bench points as they outscored the Spartans 23-13 and held them to 3-13 shooting from the floor.
11 different Bears scored throughout the game, including three in double figures scoring. Along with Arnott, Molly Gannon collected 12 points and shot 50 percent from three-point range and Samantha Weaver tallied 11 points and four rebounds.
WU had productive bench play, outscoring the Spartans 37-12. The Bears also dominated the rebounding column 41-26 and posted 22 points off turnovers.
Brenna Loftus chipped in with eight points and three boards, while Naomi Jackson, who dished out a team-best four assists added seven points along with Lauren Chao and Karisa Grandison.
WashU is back at the Field House tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m. against Carnegie Mellon.
