Box Score Waltham, Mass. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team fell 58-57 at Brandeis University on Sunday afternoon in University Athletic Association play.
The Bears led for a majority of the contest, but the Judges outscored WashU 40-27 in the second half and scored the game-winning basket on a driving layup with 2.6 seconds remaining.
With the loss, WashU drops to 13-11 (7-6, UAA) and Brandeis moves to 8-14 (3-10, UAA).
For the game, the Bears shot 31 percent from the field, while BU collectively shot 38 percent. The Judges outscored the Bears in the paint by a margin of 36-18.
Karisa Grandison was the only Bear to reach double figures scoring with 12 points on 4-5 shooting, while Maya Arnott finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
Jessica Brooks totaled eight points, while Chloe Kernan scored a season-high seven points. Sammi Matoush and Molly Gannon each registered six points. In total, nine different Bears reached the scoring column on Sunday afternoon.
It was a good start for the Bears, who held the Judges to 3-16 shooting in the first period and built a double-digit advantage at 16-6.
WashU was led in scoring by Kernan in the second frame with seven points, as the Bears used a 12-4 to close out the quarter to take a 30-18 lead into halftime.
The Bears were able to keep the lead in their favor early in the third, pushing the lead back out to 12 points multiple times, after a three from Gandison early in the period and after back-to-back layups from Arnott.
Leading 37-25, the Judges fought their way back into the game with a 9-0 run, slicing the lead down to one possession at 37-34.
Back-to-back threes from Brooks and Gannon pushed the lead back to nine at 43-34 and the Bears would go into the fourth quarter holding on to a 45-40 lead.
WU was still in control with 5:36 to play, leading 50-43 following another three-point shot from Brooks.
Brandeis immediately answered on the ensuing possession with a three of its own and then took the lead moments later on a three-point play, capping off a 9-0 run.
Statistically, it was a tough fourth quarter for the Bears, who shot just 3-12 from the field.
Trailing 52-50 late in the game, the Bears got a much needed three from Grandison to retake the lead.
As the lead swung back and forth, the contest was tied yet again at 54-54 with 43 seconds left. On the Bears' next possession, Sammi Matoush scored on a three-point play, scoring on a layup in the paint and converting the and-one free throw to put WashU in front 57-54.
With eight seconds left, the Judges were fouled on a three-point shot and BU sunk two of the three free throws which made it a 57-56 game. In addition, Brandeis also snagged the offensive board on the third missed free throw and maintained possession.
Coming out of the timeout, BU's Emma Reavis, who led all scorers with 18 points, scored on a driving layup with 2.6 to go, as the Judges went ahead 58-57.
WashU had an opportunity to win the game on the final possession, but the shot attempt was short.
WU will close out the regular season at home on February 26 against Chicago at 3:00 p.m.
