Women's Basketball Falls at No. 7 NYU

Box Score

Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team dropped a 63-45 decision at No. 7 NYU on Friday evening in University Athletic Association play.

WashU moves to 13-10 (7-5, UAA), while the No. 7 Violets improve to 20-1 (11-1, UAA). NYU offically clinches the UAA title in 2021-22 with the victory tonight.

Samantha Weaver was the lone Bear to reach double figures scoring throughout the evening with a team-high 12 points on 5-9 shooting. Weaver nearly posted a double-double, finishing the game with nine rebounds and also tabbed two blocked shots.

Maya Arnott led the Bears with 10 rebounds and scored seven points, while Jessica Brooks added nine points. In addition, Karisa Grandison posted six points and two steals.

It was a tough night for the Bears, who scored a season-low 45 points on 28 percent shooting (17-59). Collectively, NYU shot 42 percent from the field and connected on seven threes.

Both teams committed 20 turnovers each on the night, but the Violets made the most of scoring points off turnovers, winning the margin over the WashU 23-7.

WU was an efficient 10-14 from the foul line, but was only 1-15 from behind the arc. In total, the Bears ended the game with 13 second chance points and outscored NYU's bench 15-8.

Defensively, the Bears held their own early on in a low-scoring opening quarter, forcing NYU into seven turnovers.

Despite NYU holding a 12-8 lead after the first frame, the Bears would win the second quarter, outscoring the Violets 11-10.

After trailing 19-8, WashU closed out the period on an 11-3 run as it gathered momentum heading into halftime.

The run was started by back-to-back jumpers from Brooks, followed by a layup inside from Arnott.

With just over a minute left before halftime, Brooks knocked down a three-point field goal and Brenna Loftus' layup with 30 seconds left made it a 22-19 game at the break.

WU's defense had another great effort in the second quarter, forcing the Violets into tough shot selections, as they held NYU to 26 percent shooting.

However, the Violets had a big third quarter, outscoring the Bears 24-11. Turnovers also hurt WashU in the quarter, committing seven in total, as they also shot 3-12 from the field.

The Violets extended their lead from 22-19 out to 34-23 in the first four minutes of the period as momentum began to swing back into their favor.

WU managed to cut the lead back down to 10 at 36-26 midway through the quarter, but NYU would go on another run, increasing its lead out to 44-26.

NYU's largest lead of the evening came in the fourth quarter at 51-30, as the Violets' starting five combined for 55 points in total for the evening.

Statistically, the Bears had their best shooting percentage in the final quarter, shooting just under 50 percent at 6-14 from the floor.

WashU will look to bounce back on Sunday at Brandeis at 2:00 p.m. EST. The Bears defeated the Judges 79-53 at the Field House in January.
