Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team fell 81-66 at the Field House on Friday evening to Emory in University Athletic Association (UAA) play in a matchup between two of the top teams in the league.
The Bears drop to 6-4 in UAA play and 12-9 on the season, while Emory takes sole possession of second place in the league standings and moves to 7-3 and 13-6 overall.
Collectively, the Bears shot 49 percent from the field throughout the game and scored 46 points in the paint, but also committed 20 turnovers.
WU shot well over 40 percent from long range in its two previous victories, but was limited to 4-13 shooting on Friday, while Emory blistered the nets on 12-24 shooting from deep.
In addition, Emory scored 22 points off turnovers.
In the first quarter, it was a slow start offensively for both teams, as the defenses set the tone early on.
A basket at the buzzer by Jessica Brooks tied things up at 12-12 heading into the second period.
It was a continued back-and-forth grind in the second frame, as both offenses began to heat up, but neither team could gain a sizable lead.
WashU did a majority of its scoring down low, attacking the paint, as they shot 61 percent for the quarter, while Emory lit it up from deep and shot 6-10 from three-point territory.
Tied at 29 in the final minute of the quarter, the Eagles sunk back-to-back threes to take a 35-29 lead heading into halftime.
EU extended its lead out to 10 at 42-32 in the first three minutes of the third quarter, but the Bears quickly fought their way back into it with an 8-0 run after a three from Molly Gannon and five points from Arnott.
However, the Eagles closed out the final four minutes of the quarter on a 12-4 run, as the leading scorer of the evening, Brock posted 10 points in the run.
In the fourth, both teams combined for 49 points, but Emory shot 63 percent in the frame and was 11-12 from the free throw line.
After Brenna Loftus scored off an offensive rebound, the Bears chipped the lead down to 56-50 with seven minutes to play as they continued to inch closer, but were ultimately unable to cut the lead down any closer the rest of the evening.
Emory connected on another three with just over four minutes to play which increased its lead back to double digits at 64-54. The Eagles would hold a double-digit advantage on WashU in the final four minutes of the contest, as the Bears' late rally fell short.
WashU also had trouble slowing down Claire Brock and Anna Arato of EU, who scored 26 and 22 points, respectively.
Maya Arnott totaled her third straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, as she shot 8-15 from the field. Arnott has recorded at least 10 rebounds in five consecutive games.
Jessica Brooks reached double figures scoring with 16 points off the bench, shooting an efficient 7-11 from the floor.
Karisa Grandison collected 10 points and Samantha Weaver posted eight, while Sammi Matoush added seven points and five rebounds.
Naomi Jackson dished out a season-high six assists.
The Bears will return to action and will look to regroup at home on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against Rochester.
