Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team used a big second half surge as they rolled past Brandeis 79-53 on Sunday afternoon at the Field House.
WashU outscored the Judges 45-19 in the second half and finished the contest with 20 points scored off turnovers and 22 second chance points.
The Bears move to 9-7, (3-2 UAA) on the season and Brandeis drops to 5-9 (0-5 UAA).
Additionally, WashU won the rebounding edge 48-27 and held Brandeis to just 20 percent shooting from three-point territory (5-25) and 31 percent for the game.
Molly Gannon had a big day for the Bears offensively and led WU 19 points and four assists, while knocking down a season best six threes.
Samantha Weaver produced her second double-double of the season with 18 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Weaver shot 8-13 from the floor and collected seven offensive boards.
Also scoring in double figures was Naomi Jackson, who notched a career-high 14 points and connected on four three-point field goals.
Lauren Chao added eight points and five rebounds, while Brenna Loftus tabbed five points and eight rebounds, five of which were offensive boards.
After a tight and competitive first half, the Bears took the game over in the second half.
Brandeis led 18-8 to open up the first quarter, but the Bears responded with a 13-7 run to reduce the gap down to 25-21 early in the second.
WashU trailed 29-21 with four minutes left in the second period, but the game swung in the Bears' favor as they closed out the quarter on a 13-5 run to tie up the game at 34-34 at the break.
In the third quarter, it was all WashU. The Bears couldn't miss and started off 8-10 from the field, which led to a 17-0 run capped off by a layup from Maya Arnott, as WU extended its advantage out to 51-34.
Shooting an impressive 78 percent from the floor for the period , the Bears held Brandeis to 30 percent shooting, while also winning the rebounding margin in the quarter by 11.
In total, WashU outscored the Judges 26-11 in the period and were well in front at 60-45 heading into the fourth.
Despite holding a double-digit lead, the Bears kept the pressure on in the final frame, holding BU to just 3-13 shooting and eight points.
A 17-4 run gave the Bears their largest lead of the night at 28 points at 77-49, following a basket from Sammi Matoush.
WU had another strong shooting quarter, posting a 7-11 mark for 63 percent, which led to 19 points.
WashU is back in action on the road on Friday at Carnegie Mellon at 7:30 p.m.
