Box Score St. Louis, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team fell 85-68 at the Field House on Friday evening in University Athletic Association (UAA) play.
WU collects its first loss at home this season (5-1) and moves to 8-7 (2-2, UAA) on the year. NYU remains undefeated and improves to 13-0 (4-0, UAA).
The Bears battled the Violets early on as it was a high scoring first period where the score was tied three different times throughout the quarter.
NYU led 13-7 after breaking an early tie with a 6-0 run, but WashU would tie things up at 17-17, following a 10-4 run capped off by a triple from Naomi Jackson.
Trailing 21-19 heading into the second, the Bears took their first lead of the night after a free throw from Jessica Brooks gave the Bears a 25-24 edge.
WashU was unable to maintain its advantage after it missed its next nine field goal attempts, which led to a 12-0 run from NYU, as the Violets took a 36-28 lead heading into the half.
Midway through the third, the Bears kept themselves within striking distance at 42-35 after consecutive layups from Brooks and Maya Arnott.
However, NYU closed out the period on an 11-4 run, shooting 7-9 from the free throw line in the quarter, extending its lead out to 53-39 heading into the final frame.
Statistically, WashU had its best shooting performance in the fourth, shooting 10-22 from the field, but the Bears were unable to cut the lead down any closer than 12, as the Violets shot 50 percent for the quarter for the second time tonight.
With 59 fouls called in total for the evening, both teams combined for 76 free throws, with the Violets shooting 36-44 and WashU finishing 21-32.
NYU outscored WashU in the paint 38-22 with both teams scoring 12 points each off turnovers.
The Bears were led in scoring by Molly Gannon, who posted 12 points and was 6-6 at the free throw line.
Samantha Weaver also reached double figures scoring with 11 points, while Maya Arnott and Karissa Grandison each recorded nine points.
Jessica Brooks and Lauren Chao both collected seven points each. Both Arnott and Brooks led WashU in rebounding with seven boards apiece.
NYU's starting lineup combined for 75 points on the evening with Jenny Walker posting a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bears will return to the Field House on Sunday afternoon as they play host to Brandeis at 2:00 p.m.
