Brooks' 30-Point Double-Double Leads WashU Past Rochester, 78-71

Rochester, N.Y. – Behind a dominant double-double performance of 30 points and 11 rebounds from Jessica Brooks, the Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball defeated Rochester 78-71 on the road on Sunday afternoon. 

The Bears improve to 2-1 in UAA play and are now 8-6 overall, while Rochester drops to 10-4, (2-1, UAA). 

Brooks, a St. Louis native, recorded her second career 30-point game after shooting 11-18 from the field, including 3-4 from three-point land and 5-6 from the foul line. She currently leads the UAA in scoring in conference league games as of Sunday afternoon.

WashU shook off a slow start in the first quarter, shooting only 3-17 from the field and scoring 12 points. 

A big second quarter boost helped the Bears find their rhythm offensively, scoring 24 points on 62 percent shooting (10-16).

WU ended the quarter in impressive fashion, finishing the half on a 9-3 run after trailing 31-27 to take a 36-34 lead at halftime. 

In the final 38 seconds of the quarter, WashU closed it out with a three from Naomi Jackson followed by a key defensive stop, and then a layup in transition from Samantha Weaver

Carrying their momentum into the third period, the Bears started things off with a 10-4 run, attacking inside and scoring all 10 points on layups in the paint, as WashU extended its lead to 44-36. 

WashU maintained a 56-46 edge after three quarters of play, outscoring the Yellowjackets 44-29 in the second and third periods combined. 

Keeping its foot on the gas, WU outscored UR 8-5 in the opening minutes of the fourth and posted its largest lead of the day at 64-51 after a jumper from Brooks. 

Rochester fought back with a late rally and responded with a furious 16-3 run over the next four minutes and tied things up at 67-67 with 2:47 remaining. 

The Bears went back to Brooks, who had the hot hand with 13 points in the fourth quarter. 

Brooks scored four consecutive points on another layup down low and sank two free throws to put the Bears back in front 71-67 with under two minutes left. 

After a bucket from UR, Molly Gannon drilled a mid-range jump shot on the ensuing possession with one minute remaining to keep the Bears in front 73-69.

Brooks and Gannon were both clutch down the stretch, knocking down seven free throws combined in the final 90 seconds of the contest.

The Bears finished the game shooting 91 percent (11-12) from the foul line. 

Rebounding was also another key for WashU, as they outrebounded the Yellowjackets 37-24. 

Maya Arnott notched her ninth game of double figures scoring this season with 12 points and nine rebounds. 

Gannon scored nine and dished out a team-high four assists, while Naomi Jackson added eight points. 

Samantha Weaver added six points and nine rebounds and Brenna Loftus tallied six points and five boards in the victory. 

WashU will return to the Field House for its UAA home opener against NYU on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
