Box Score Atlanta, Ga. – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team fell 60-56 in a hard-fought battle on the road at Emory University on Friday evening in University Athletic Association (UAA) play.
The game went down to the wire, but the Bears were held to just nine points in the fourth quarter and shot a season-low 2-17 from three throughout the night.
WashU's three-game winning streak comes to an end and the Bears (7-6) move to 1-1 in league play following the loss. Emory collects its first win in league play (1-1) and improves to 7-4 on the season.
Samantha Weaver and Maya Arnott led WashU in the scoring column on Friday with 15 points each.
Sammi Matoush reached double figures scoring for the fourth consecutive game and compiled 11 points and seven rebounds.
Using an 8-0 run to close out the first quarter, the Bears held Emory to only 2-16 shooting and took a 14-5 edge.
However, Emory responded back with a strong showing in the second, as they shot 52 percent from the field and outscored WashU 28-13 in the quarter, including a 17-2 run.
The Bears' offense went cold, shooting just 5-20 in the frame and WU trailed 33-27 at halftime.
WashU bounced back with a spark in the third, as they went back in front following a 12-5 run. A layup from Samantha Weaver and a jumper from Jessica Brooks pushed the Bears in front at 47-44 late in the quarter.
Leading 47-46 to start the fourth, the Bears extended their lead out to 55-50 with 3:39 left after a basket down low from Maya Arnott.
WashU's offense stalled and missed its next four field goal attempts and Emory used a 6-0 run to reclaim the lead with less than a minute to play.
With 13 seconds left, the Bears trailed 58-56 and had possession and an opportunity to tie up the game, but committed a turnover and were unable to regain possession before the buzzer sounded.
WU finished the contest with 34 points scored in the paint and 13 fastbreak points.
Brenna Loftus led WashU in rebounding with 11 on the night, marking a season-high.
Emory's Claire Brock, who is third in scoring in the UAA, led all scorers tonight with 17 points.
The Bears are back in action on Sunday afternoon at Rochester at 1:00 p.m. EST.
