Box Score St. Louis, Mo., September 4, 2021 – With just 1:47 left on the clock, the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team broke a scoreless deadlock to claim a 1-0 victory over Rose Hulman and improve to 2-0 on the year.
Junior Sergio Rivas sent up a pass to senior Nolan Wolf who ripped it past a diving Evan Hofer in goal to give the Bears the win less than two minutes later. It was the first goal of the season for Wolf, who led the team in goals in 2019.
The Bears recorded seven shots-on-goal against the Fightin' Engineers, but none of them were successful until Wolf's at the end.
Armando Sanchez-Conde had the first shot on-frame in the seventh minute, which was saved by Hofer. Hofer also made plays on shots from Alistair Shaw in the eighth minute and Michael Gemmell in the 13th minute to keep the Bears off the board.
Nao Yanase had a chance in the 30th minute, but Hofer was there to make the play again. Landon Green had a very solid chance just as the first half was ending, but a save from Hofer sent the teams into the break still scoreless.
Wolf had the first shot of the second half, which sailed wide of the net in the 48th minute. Alex Smith then had a shot-on-goal five minutes in, which was saved by Hofer. That was the final shot-on-goal until Wolf put one in the back of the net.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Matt Martin made four saves for his second clean sheet of the season.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they host Webster at 7 p.m.
