Men's Soccer shuts out Wisconsin-Whitewater at home, 2-0

Box Score

St. Louis, Mo., September 24, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team put together a complete team effort on Friday night, which led to a 2-0 shutout victory at home over Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The Bears record their second shutout on the week and move to 6-1 on the year and give the Warhawks their first loss of the season, as they drop to 5-1-1.

Additionally, WashU remains perfect in home contests this season at 4-0.

In the early stages of the contest, WashU nearly took the lead off a header shot attempt from Gavin Morse, but the shot was deflected by a UWW defender.

Wisconsin-Whitewater also fired off a barrage of shot attempts, but were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net.

After a yellow card off a foul in the box, WashU took the lead in the 27th minute as Armando Sanchez-Conde scored on a penalty kick goal, netting his second goal of the season.

UWW tried to knot up the game right before halftime, but Matt Martin collected a couple of big saves on multiple shot attempts to keep the Bears in front heading into halftime.

In the second half of action, WashU caught an unlucky break in the 48th minute after a shot from Sergio Rivas was saved and kicked away at the last second by a UWW defender before crossing the goal line.

Lucas Ragula looked to score off the rebound, but his shot was saved by the Warhawks' keeper.

Owen Culver gave the Bears a two-goal cushion with an excellent shot from the top of the box in the 73rd minute off an assist from Julian Gancman.

In the final 15 minutes, UWW was limited to only two shot attempts as the Bears were able to preserve the shutout victory.

As a team, WashU tallied 10 shots in total as Sergio Rivas led the way with a team-best four shot attempts.

Matt Martin posted six saves, marking another shutout in goal this season.

The Bears are back in play on October 2 at Rochester as they begin UAA play.
