Box Score Greenville, Ill., September 20, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team bounced back with a decisive 3-0 shutout victory at Greenville on Monday evening.
WashU improves to 5-1 on the year and moves to 2-1 in road contests this season. Greenville drops to 3-5 with the loss.
The Bears had an early opportunity in the first two minutes of the game to get on the board, but a shot from Rabee Haidari was deflected and saved by Greenville's keeper.
WashU continued to stay on the attack as they applied pressure on the Panthers and were able to control and maintain possession for a majority of the entire contest.
Later on, the Bears had a set of multiple great looks on goal that just missed, with one shot off a header that narrowly cleared the cross bar and a shot inside the box that landed just wide.
A header goal scored by junior Gavin Morse off a corner kick broke the scoreless tie in the 27th minute. The goal marked Morse's first of his career as Alex Smith provided the assist to give the Bears a 1-0 edge.
Roughly 12 minutes later, Sergio Rivas connected with John Daniels for a beautiful header goal off a perfect touch to give WashU more momentum heading into the half ahead 2-0.
Two minutes into the second half, Rivas got into the scoring column himself with a goal off an excellent shot from in the box assisted by Owen Culver.
Statistically, WashU allowed only two shot attempts from Greenville throughout the duration of the contest, while the Bears posted a season-high 26 shots in total. Additionally, WashU finished with 10 corner kicks and GU was held to zero.
Sergio Rivas tallied a team-best three points with a goal and an assist, marking his fifth goal scored and third assist for the year.
Owen Culver led WashU with four shot attempts and tacked on his first assist of the season, while Ezra Joseph notched a season-high three shots.
The Bears return to play on Friday as they host UW-Whitewater at Francis Olympic Field at 7:00 p.m.
