River Forest, Ill., September 11, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team wrapped up the 11th annual River Forest Collegiate Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
After a strong showing on day one, Abhi Ramireddy won the No. 1 Singles Flight. After winning his opening-round match on Friday, Ramireddy went on to defeat Xavier's Brett Winters 4-6, 7-5, (9) to advance to the championship match against Youngstown's States Laurentiu Mandocescu. Ramireddy clinched the top finish with a 7-6 (3), 1-6, (8) win over Mandocescu.
Sophomore Gaurav Singh fell in his first match of the No. 2 Singles Flight on Friday but went on to win his next match against Eastern Illinois' Thomas Wallace, 6-3, 6-3. He advanced to the fifth-place match against Illinois State's Pol Botifoll Rius, but the match was not played due to injuries on both sides.
After a first-round win on Friday in the No. 3 Singles Flight, sophomore Jared Phillips fell to University of Illinois Chicago's Gustavo Schwebel 1-6, 6-4, (8). He went on to win the third place match against St. Louis University's Oscar Alvarez, 6-5 (3), 6-0.
In the No. 4 Singles Flight senior Sam Komis fell in the first round and went on to play St. Louis University's Adam Behun in the next round. Komis fell 7-6, 7-5 to move on to the seventh place match, which he won. He defeated Eastern Illinois' Tyler Carlin 6-2, 6-0.
Sophomore Henri Ohl reached the finals match of the No. 5 Singles Flight after winning his first match on Friday. He went on to defeat University of Illinois Chicagos' Kevin Kruzel 6-7 (5), 6-3, (9) to advance to the championship match. Ultimately, he finished second in the flight after losing to Xavier's Marco Pennelli 6-0, 6-2.
First-year John Fakouri won his first round match in the No. 6 Singles Flight on Friday to advance and face Northern Illinois' Armin Koschtojan in the next round. He fell to Koschtojan 7-5, 6-4 and moved on to play in the third place match, falling to Xavier's Shashank Reddy 6-7 (4), 6-4, (12).
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, September 25 when they host the WashU Doubles Tournament at Tao Tennis Center.
