Box Score St. Louis, Mo., September 11, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw in its home opener against Loras on Saturday afternoon. The Bears are now 1-0-1 on the season.
WashU was not without scoring opportunities, outshooting Loras 19-4, including eight shots on goal.
The Bears had one of their best chances of the game in the 104th minute when Erin Flynn sent a ball in, but it hit off the post and was deflected out, resulting in a corner kick.
WashU got off its first shot just 1:19 in as a Sarah Neltner try was saved by goalkeeper Kyndal Kells. Senior Emily Kaufman put another shot on goal for the Bears in the 13th minute, which was also saved by Kells.
The Bears continued to push things into their offensive third, with Sydney Essler ripping a shot towards go in the 23rd minute, which was stopped by Kells.
A shot from Jolie Carl was blocked by a Loras' defender, resulting in a corner kick in the 29th minute. Kate Flynn then got off a shot, but Kells was there again to make the play.
Goalkeeper Sidney Conner made her first of two saves in the 43rd minute, stopping a shot from Loras' Lauren Riggle.
Erin Flynn put the first shot on goal in the second half, which resulted in a Kells save in the 52nd minute.
Conner notched her second save of the day in the 56th minute, making the play on a Bella Talbot shot.
The Bears recorded back-to-back corner kicks in the 59th minute and Ariana Miles got off a shot a minute later, which was wide. In the 61st minute, Erin Flynn sent a header toward goal, but it sailed wide as well.
Essler had a chance in the 63rd minute, but Kells continued to be solid in goal for the Duhawks, amking the play. It would be the final shot for either team as regular ticked down.
The Bears did not allow Loras to get off any shots in either overtime period. A header from Gabbie Cesarone went over the net and a shot from Tyler Wilson was blocked in the first overtime, sending the game into a second.
In addition to Erin Flynn's shot that hit the post in the 104th minute, Wilson also put a shot on frame in the 109th minute, which was saved by Kells.
WashU has a quick turnaround, as the Bears host Carthage tomorrow at 11 a.m.
