Box Score St. Louis, Mo., September 11, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team came away with a big win over No. 12 North Park on Saturday afternoon. The 3-2 victory pushes the Bears to 4-0 on the year.
The Bears scored just 10:13 in, as sophomore John Daniels scored his first career goal off a pass from Sergio Rivas. With the goalkeeper charging the ball, Daniels chipped it in over his head to give WashU a 1-0 edge.
WashU followed that up with another goal in the 19th minute. Sophomore Owen Culver scored his third goal of the year off a free kick which sailed through several defenders to put the Bears up 2-0.
The Vikings cut the lead in half in the 24th minute, as Oskar Safstrom headed in a cross from Gustav Ericsson.
It wasn't until the 78th minute that the Bears put their third goal of the game on the board, this time from senior Armando Sanchez-Conde. The ball hit the post and rebounded, where Sanchez-Conde was there to take care of it.
With just 48 seconds remaining on the clock, North Park added its second goal as Jesse Anamoo capitalized on a shuffle in front of the goal to score.
The Bears also had a chance in the 22nd minute, but Sergio Rivas' shot was saved by goalkeeper Alfred Sward.
North Park had a handful of chances to score the equalizer or game winner. Angel Barriga put a shot on frame in the 14th minute, but it was saved by senior goalkeeper Matt Martin. In the 37th minute, Ulrik Lund sent in a shot, but Martin was there to make the play. Martin made another save in the 63rd minute on a Willy Wickman shot.
Statistically, WashU finished with seven shots including four on goal, while North Park had six total shots with five on goal.
In goal, Martin had three saves to notch his fourth win of the year. North Park's Sward had just one save on the day.
The Bears hit the road on Wednesday as they travel to Hope for a 3:30 p.m. matchup. WashU returns home for an 11:00 a.m. game against Wheaton next Saturday, September 18.
