No. 6 Women's Soccer to Host NCAA First and Second Rounds

St. Louis, Mo., November 12, 2021 – The No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team is set to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Francis Olympic Field.

Joining the Bears are Dominican University, Hanover College and Beloit College. The winner of the St. Louis regional will advance to play the winner of the St. Paul, Minn. regional hosted by St. Catherine and featuring Wis.-Superior, Wis.-La Crosse and Wartburg.

WashU vs. Regional Field

The Bears have faced Dominican and Hanover just one time each in program history and have never had a match against Beloit. WashU defeated Dominican, 1-0, in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament and have not faced the Stars since. WashU defeated Hanover, 4-0, in 2016 in the second game of the season.

Scouting Dominican

Dominican is currently 18-2-2 on the season and finished Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play 12-1-0. The Stars won the NACC by defeating Marian, 4-2, in the opening round, Milwaukee School of Engineering, 2-1, in the semifinal and Illinois Institute of Technology, 2-1, to win the conference title.

Junior Regan Coxon leads the team with 22 goals and 11 assists for 55 total points this season. Her 55 points ranks third among Division III players this year. Coxon's 22 goals is fifth and her 11 assists is tied for ninth nationally. First-year Katie Norlie has scored nine goals and recorded three assists for 21 points. Ashley Ishman has played and started in 20 games this year in goal, racking up 1,705 minutes and letting in just nine goals for a 0.48 goals-against average.

WashU and Dominican have had just two common opponents this season – Loras and Wheaton. The Bears tied with Loras, 0-0, while the Stars lost, 1-0. WashU beat Wheaton, 2-0 and Dominican defeated Wheaton, 3-0.

Scouting Hanover

Hanover is currently 13-1-4 on the season and finished the Heartland Athletic Collegiate Conference (HACC) slate at 7-1-1. The Panthers won the HACC in a penalty kick shootout against Mt. St. Joseph. The teams were in a 1-1 deadlock after two overtimes but Hanover clinched the title with a 4-3 win in PKs.

Senior Maggie Day leads the Panthers with 15 goals and three assists on the year for 33 total points. Senior Autumn Boothby has scored 11 goals and recorded five assists for 27 points. Sophomore Jostin Reeves leads the team with seven assists. Sophomore Maggie Hinegardner has played in 17 games, starting 15 of them in the net. She has allowed just seven goals for a 0.44 goals-against average and has seven shutouts.

WashU and Hanover have two common opponents – Wheaton and Rose-Hulman. The Bears defeated Wheaton, 2-0, and Hanover tied the Thunder, 1-1. WashU took down Rose-Hulman, 1-0, and the Panthers tied the Engineers in the first meeting and won the second, 2-1.

Scouting Beloit

Beloit is currently 8-4-6 on the year and finished Midwest Conference (MWC) play 4-1-3. The Bucs defeated Lake Forest College, 1-0, in the first round of the MWC tournament and won the title in penalty kicks, advancing 3-0 over Knox to earn a bid to their first-ever NCAA Tournament.

Senior Makenna Downing leads the team with five goals and two assists for 12 total points while sophomore Abigail Membrino has five goals for 10 points. Sophomore Natalie Ortiz has scored four goals and recorded two assists for 10 points on the year. Junior Audrey Ketterer has played and started in all 18 games for the Bucs, allowing just six goals for a 0.62 goals-against average.

WashU and Beloit have just one opponent in common this season – Carthage. The Bears defeated Carthage 7-1, while Beloit lost to Carthage 3-1.

WashU vs. 2021 NCAA Playoff Field

The Bears have faced seven teams in the NCAA Tournament this year (four of them fellow UAA teams) – Loras, Fontbonne, Emory, Case Western Reserve, Chicago, Carnegie Mellon and Wheaton. WashU is 4-1-2 against those opponents, having beaten Fontbonne, Emory, Wheaton and Carnegie; tying Loras and Chicago; and losing to Case Western Reserve.

WashU in the NCAA Tournament

This year marks the Bears' 20th NCAA Tournament. WashU holds a 40-15-9 (.695) record in the NCAA Tournament and have won the National Championship once in 2016. This year also marks the 15th-straight NCAA tournament appearance for the Bears, as they have made it every year since 2006 (the 2020 NCAA Championship was canceled due to COVID).

The 2021 Championship

The NCAA Division III women's soccer championship consists of a field of 64 teams. Forty-two conference received automatic bids while one team was selected from Pool B, which is made of independent institutions as well as members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The final 21 berths consist of Pool C teams, which includes institutions from automatic-qualifying conferences that did not win their conference championship and any remaining Pool B teams.

All tournament games leading up to the national semifinals will be played on the campuses of the competing institutions. Sixteen sites will host four teams for first-and second-round competition Nov. 12 and 13 or 13 and 14.

Second-round winners will advance to one of four sectional sites Nov. 19 and 20 or 20 and 21.  Winners of the four sectionals will advance to the national semifinals, which take place Dec. 3 at UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina. The national championship game will be played Dec. 4.

Tickets

Tickets will be sold at the venue prior to each game. Adult tickets will cost $7 while students, seniors and children ages three to 12 will be $5.
