No. 8 Men's Soccer Shuts Out Millikin on the Road, 2-0

Decatur, Ill., October 23, 2021 – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team earned its eighth shutout of the season on Saturday afternoon after a 2-0 victory at Millikin in non-conference play.

WashU moves to 9-2-1 on the year and is now 4-1 in road contests this season. Additionally, WashU has now outscored its opponents this season 22-6.

Saturday's match was dominated by WashU in several statistical categories. The Bears outshot Millikin 21-8 and placed 11 shots-on-goal, while the Bears' defense had another splendid outing. WashU limited Milikin's chances and also maintained possession for much of the afternoon.

The first goal of the game came within in the first five minutes of the contest. After controlling the possession back, John Daniels set up Nolan Wolf with a good look inside the box from 10 yards out as he connected for his second goal of the year.

WashU added another goal late in the first half in the 33rd minute, following a booming kick from Matt Martin, which allowed Joseph Hipskind to score his first goal as a Bear. Hipskind scored on a shot chipped over the keeper that bounced off the crossbar and into the goal.

The Bears placed several shots-on-goal throughout the course of the opening half and were out-shooting the Big Blue 13-3 at halftime. 

Millikin's best look of the game came in the 24th minute off a cross into the box, but the shot attempt was saved by a diving deflection from Matt Martin.

Martin recorded three saves in his 45 minutes of action in goal. Chad Wunderlich entered the game in the second half, completing the shutout and earning one save.

In the second half, the Bears turned to a different lineup as several reserves saw playing time in the half.

WashU finished with eight shots in the second half and limited the Big Blues' opportunities to only five shots.

Statistically, Michael Gemmell and Julian Gancman each registered a team-best three shots in the contest. Landon Green, Nolan Wolf, and Joseph Hipskind all tacked on two shots apiece.

The Bears will return to action on Friday, October 29 at Carnegie Mellon at 6:30 p.m. CT.
