Kalamazoo, Mich., October 1, 2021 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team opened up the ITA Central Regional with a great effort across the board on Friday.
In doubles action, No. 2 seed Abhi Ramireddy/ Daniel Li advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-2 victory over Wittenberg and an 8-4 win over DePauw University.
Jared Phillips and Scott Yamamoto defeated the No. 3 seeded Kenyon College doubles pair 8-3 to kick things off for the day. However, the duo would fall 8-3 in the round of 16 to Principia.
Ramireddy/Li will play again tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. against the No. 5 seeded doubles team from Case Western Reserve University.
In the singles draw, the Bears did not drop a match in the first round, and won seven matches on the day, with three players moving on the round of 16.
No. 5 seed Abhi Ramireddy, the highest seeded WashU singles player, strolled to the round of 16 with two straight set victories.
The junior defeated Clark Kent of Greenville University 6-1, 6-0 and Thomas Partridge from DePauw 6-1, 6-2.
Additionally, No. 9 seeds Gaurav Singh and Daniel Li both advanced to the round of 16. Singh made quick work of his opponent in the first round with a 6-0, 6-0 victory and defeated Pablo Gallart of Hanover College 6-2, 6-1 in the second round.
Li won his opening match in thrilling fashion. Bouncing back from a 6-3 opening set loss, Li won the second set 7-5 and then claimed a 13-11 win in the third-set tiebreaker to advance to the second round.
In the second match of the day, Li rolled past Kalamazoo College in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Lucas Guy also collected a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the opening round, but dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to the No. 5 seed Ian Yi from Kalamazoo College in round two.
Singles play begins tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m.
