Sproule and Wolf Score as WashU Falls at Wheaton

Wheaton, Ill., Sept. 20, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team had its four-match unbeaten streak snapped with a 3-2 loss at Wheaton College Friday in Wheaton, Ill.

Junior Will Sproule scored in the 83rd minute to trim the lead to 3-2, and the Bears had a chance to tie it in the closing seconds after a cross was sent into the box.

Wheaton improved to 5-2-1, with the win, while WashU dropped to 3-2-1.

Trailing 1-0, the Bears had a chance to tie the contest before half but junior Sean Connors missed on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute.

WashU fell behind 2-0 early in the second half, but sophomore Nolan Wolf scored his second goal off the year off the bench in the 52nd minute to make it 2-1. Wolf's goal was assisted by classmate Alex Smith for the second time this season.

WashU outshot Wheaton 17-16 for the contest, including 9-8 in the second half. Each team had four corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Martin (3-2-1) made five saves in the loss.

WashU takes on Webster on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the WashU women's team. Head coach Joe Clarke will take a second stab at earning career win number 450.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: Wheaton leads the all-time series with WashU 19-15-4, and the Thunder snapped a four-game losing streak to the Bears … WashU is ranked No. 4 in the Central Region and Wheaton is No. 6 … The goal for Sproule was the seventh of his career, and the third straight year he has scored against Wheaton.
