Men's Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak to Four

St. Louis, Mo., Sept 13, 2019 – In a battle of two regionally ranked teams, sophomores Alex Smith and Nolan Wolf each scored their first career goals as the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team posted a 3-0 win over Dominican University Friday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU outshot Dominican 23-5 for the game and had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Stars did not record a shot in the final 53 minutes.

WashU improved to 3-1-1 with the win and ran its unbeaten streak to four games, while Dominican fell to 2-2-1.

In a span of 2:20 late in the first half, Smith and Wolf scored to break a 0-0 tie to give WashU the two-goal advantage.

Wolf netted the first goal off a header on a perfect cross from Smith at 36:15 to make it 1-0. Smith then found the back of the net in the 39th minute after corralling a loose ball in the box to make it 2-0. WashU outshot Dominican 8-5 in the first half. 

The Bears smothered Dominican in the second half, outshooting the Stars 15-0. Freshman Julian Gancman nearly made it a three-goal game after hit shot went off the crossbar.

Sophomore Aidan Ryan concluded the scoring from WashU with a goal in the 89th minute on a shot from 33 yards that stifled Dominican goalkeeper Daniel Dominguez.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Martin (3-1-1) made one save as WashU's defense record its third shutout in the last four games. 

WashU has a week off before turning to action at Wheaton College (Ill.) on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
