WashU S&D Leads DIII Teams After Day 1 of Midwest Invite

Chicago, Ill., Feb. 22, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis swimming & diving program finished day one of competition at the Midwest Invitational Friday evening in Chicago.

The No. 9-ranked WashU women lead the seven team field with 177 points while the No. 6-ranked WashU men are second of eight programs with 132 points. Division I University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (173) leads the men's field.

The WashU women had three runner-up finishes including junior Maddie Nelson's 5:12.52 in the 500 freestyle. The remaining two second place finishes were on relays. Nelson anchored the 400 medley relay that placed second with freshman Natalia Castillo, sophomore Jennifer Mansour and junior Hailey Jenkins (4:04.27). Freshman Grace Carey, junior Claire Wiley, Mansour and Castillo posted a runner-up time of 1:40.17 in the 200 freestyle relay.

The WashU men also swam to a second place time in the 400 medley relay. The group posted a time of 3:26.03 led by junior Nozomi Horikawa, junior Vincent Huang, sophomore Ben Johnston and freshman Zach Halawa. Horikawa (1:54.03) and freshman Alexander Zuga (4:37.85) placed third individually in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle respectively.
