St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 9, 2019 –The Washington University men's and women swimming & diving teams picked up big wins over the University of Chicago on Saturday at Millstone Pool.
The men's squad won 175-113 while the women's team collected a 160-140 victory.
The men's team started off the meet with a bang as they set a new pool record in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of senior Jerry Chen, senior Vincent Huang, freshman Barclay Dale, and senior Chase Van Patten put together a time of 1:33.33, edging out the time of 1:33.88 set in 2015.
Freshman Mason Kelber won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:34.74 and the 500-yard freestyle at 4:36.87. Senior Simon Deshusses posted a first-place time of 58.71 in the 100-yard breaststroke, while freshman Andrei Schwartz won the 100-yard backstroke after tapping the wall at 50.96. Freshman Jonathan Ma collected the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly (52.03) as Van Patten tallied the top time of 21. 34 in the 50-yard freestyle.
WashU collected the top time in the 200-yard freestyle relay after the team of Deshusses, senior Peyton Wilson, Van Patten and Chen finished with a time of 1:24.42.
Sophomore Nathan Katz had quite the day, collecting three first-place finishes. He won the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.49), 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.21) and 400-yard individual medley (4:05.87).
The women opened the meet with a first place finished in the 200-yard medley relay as well. The quartet of junior Elle Pollitt, senior Stephanie Li, freshman Sandra Meszaros, and senior Mollie Seidner posted a time of 1:47.38.
Pollitt also won the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.54) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.99). She was also the lead leg in the winning 200-yard free relay, working with Seidner, freshman Noelle DiClemente, and sophomore Grace Carey to post a time of 1:36.88.
Li also collected victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.99) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.09). Meszaros finished first in the 100-yard butterfly (57.92) and 200-yard butterfly (2:06.41).
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, November 23, when they head to Bloomington, Ill., for the Illinois Wesleyan Invite.
