Slow Start Hampers Men's Soccer in Loss at Brandeis

Waltham, Mass., Oct. 20, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team could not recover from a two-goal deficit in the opening five minutes of play as the Bears suffered a 3-0 loss at Brandeis Sunday in Waltham, Mass.

Brandeis improved to 8-3-4 and 2-1-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while WashU suffered its third-straight defeat and dropped to 6-5-1 and 1-3 in the league.

WashU outshot Brandeis 20-12, and the Bears had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

WashU went down 1-0 in the third minute after Max Breiter sent a looping header that went over the head and off the hand of senior goalkeeper Connor Mathes. In the fifth minute, Will DeNight sent a strike into the far corner that Mathes had no chance at to make it 2-0.

The Bears got into a flow offensively and had six shots in the opening 20 minutes of play but could not muster a goal. WashU had its best scoring chance in the 37th minute when sophomore Alistair Shaw lined up a shot from 35 yards out and Brandeis goalkeeper Greg Irwin punched the ball over the bar.

WashU outshot Brandeis 11-7 in the opening half, registering just two shots on goal.

Freshman Shiv Lamba nearly cut the deficit in half in the 52nd minute, but his volley inside the box was corralled by Irwin.

Brandeis got the insurance goal in the 77th minute to put the game out of reach. 

Mathes (2-3) took the loss in goal making two saves.

WashU plays its final non-conference on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (6-6-2). Game time is set for Noon.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Brandeis 18-11-3, but the Judges have won three out of the last four meetings … The Bears are 2-5-1 on the road this season.
