WashU Men's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision at NYU

Riverdale, N.Y., Oct. 18, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team outshot New York University but could not muster a goal in a 1-0 loss to the Violets Friday evening at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y.

New York won its sixth-straight game to improve to 6-4-1 and 3-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while WashU suffered its second-straight defeat and fell to 6-4-1 and 1-2 in the UAA.

WashU outshot NYU 11-6 and had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Connor Mathes made a pair of saves in the opening 10 minutes of play to keep it tied. Sophomore Aidan Ryan had a chance in the box in the 15th minute but NYU keeper Luca Mancuso came up with a big save. 

WashU and NYU each had four shots in the opening half, and the Bears had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

NYU scored in the 49th minute after Sergio Monton found the back of the net with a shot from 22 yards out.

Mathes (2-2) picked up the loss in goal and made three saves.

WashU continues its four-game road swing Brandeis on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m. (ET).

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series against New York 25-5-3, and the Violets won for the first time since 2009.
