Perez Sends Men's Soccer Past Wheaton in Double OT

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 22, 2018 – Senior Kyle Perez got the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team back to .500 with a goal in the second overtime in a 2-1 victory over Wheaton College (Ill.) Saturday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU won its third-straight game and improved to 3-3, while Wheaton had its three-game win streak snapped and fell to 5-2-1.

In the 108thminute, junior Makio Yamamoto sent a corner kick into the box that skipped of the hands of Wheaton goalkeeper Drew Cammarano and onto the foot of Perez, who booted it for the game-winner. 

WashU outshot Wheaton 15-13 and had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. 

Sophomore Will Sproule, who scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Wheaton a year ago, came off the bench and made an immediate impact with a goal off a header in the 29thminute. Senior Ben Strozewski sent a long cross to classmate Ryan Sproule, who headed it to his younger brother for his second career goal.

Wheaton answered back with a goal in the 43rdminute as the teams went to half tied at 1-1. Each team registered five shots on goal in the first half.

Junior goalkeeper Connor Mathes improved to 2-3 and lowered his goals against average to 1.15. Mathes made one save in the victory.

WashU has one day off before traveling to Greenville University (6-1) on Monday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: Wheaton leads the all-time series with WashU 18-15-4, but the Bears have won the last four meetings …  The Bears have outshot all six opponents… The game-winning goal for Perez was the second of his career.
