Box Score Wheaton, Ill., Sept. 1, 2018– The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team battled back from a two-goal deficit to tie the contest, but a late goal was the difference in the Bears' 3-2 loss to Benedictine University Saturday at the Bob Baptista Invitational in Wheaton, Ill.
WashU outshot Benedictine 30-9, and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Benedictine goalkeepers Zach Albright (three saves) and Shawn Chervets (13 saves) combined for 16 saves.
Trailing 2-0 at half time, the Bears cut the lead in half following a penalty kick by senior Kyle Perez in the 55thminute.
Just five minutes later, senior Marc VandenBerg headed home a cross from sophomore Jeff Guttentag to knot the score at 2-2.
Adam Chaplin scored the game-winner for Benedictine in the 76thminute.
WashU junior goalkeeper Connor Mathes (0-2) made three saves in the defeat.
WashU (0-2) takes the field on Friday, Sept. 7, at DePauw University. Game time is set for 7 p.m. (ET).
