WashU Remains in Hunt for UAA Title with Win over Brandeis

St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 26, 2018 – Senior forward Ryan Sproule scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Brandeis University Friday at Francis Field in St. Louis. 

WashU improved to 7-6-1 and 3-1-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Brandeis fell to 7-7-2 and 2-2-1 in the conference. WashU remains in a tie for second place in the conference standings, two points behind first place Chicago.

WashU hosts New York University (11-4, 2-3 UAA) on Sunday at 11 a.m. Prior to the contest, the Bears will honor their five seniors:Kyle PerezMarco PinheiroRyan SprouleBen Strozewski and Marc VandenBerg.

WashU dominated the first half outshooting Brandeis 8-2 in the first half. Sproule slid a shot to the far corner off a pass from junior Jack Newman in the 18thminute to make it 1-0. The goal for Sproule was his team-leading ninth of the year.

Junior Makio Yamamoto extended the WashU lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 40thminute. Sophomore Sean Connors sent a long cross to Sproule, who sent a header into the box to Yamamoto for the goal.

Junior goalkeeper Connor Mathes came up big for WashU in the second half. He made a breakaway stop in the 49thminute, and then made a diving save in the 54thminute off a deflection. Mathes (5-4-1) finished the night with five saves.

WashU outshot Brandeis 18-15 and had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Brandeis 18-10-3, and the Bears snapped a two-game losing streak to the Judges … WashU has a 5-0 record at home … Sproule has 30 career goals, one shy of entering the WashU top-10 list … Yamamoto's goal was his first of the season and third of his career.
