Second Half Flurry Lifts Men's Soccer Past IWU

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 17, 2017 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team netted a pair of goals within a 10-minute span in the second half to post a 2-1 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University Sunday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU improved to 4-0-1 with the win, while IWU fell to 2-3-1.

Junior Camilo Haller scored the game-winner for the Bears in the 66th minute when he scored from 20 yards out with a left-footed shot to the far corner. The goal for Haller was his first of the season and third of his career.

Senior Colin McCune (4-0-1) made six saves and picked up the win for WashU in goal. The Bears added two team saves, including a diving header in the box by senior Andrew Zingone with 52 seconds left to keep it a one-goal game.

Illinois Wesleyan scored in the eighth minute to take the early 1-0 advantage. WashU had a chance to tie it up in the 15th minute but junior Chris Rieger's penalty kick was stopped by IWU goalkeeper Joe Johnson.

Junior Ryan Sproule tied the contest in the 56th minute when his shot deflected off an IWU defender into the back of the net. Freshman Andrew Brunetti was credited with the assist after he sent a long cross into the box to Sproule.

WashU outshot Illinois Wesleyan 23-17, including 16-9 in the second half. IWU had the 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

WashU travels to Wheaton College (3-3) on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Illinois Wesleyan 15-0-2, and the Bears have won six -straight meetings … The game-winning goal for Haller was the second of his career … The Bears are unbeaten in their last seven games dating back to last season.
