Box Score St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 13, 2017 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over Webster University Wednesday in the Battle of Big Bend at Francis Field in St. Louis.
WashU improved to 3-0-1 with the win, while Webster fell to 3-2.
Senior goalkeeper Colin McCune (3-0-1) made one save and picked up the Bears' third-straight shutout. WashU has allowed just one goal in 380 minutes played this season.
Junior Ryan Sproule quickly made it 1-0 in the sixth minute when he headed home a corner kick from sophomore Makio Yamamoto. The goal for Sproule was his fourth of the season and 18th of his career.
Senior Andrew Zingone nearly made it a two-goal game in the 20th minute when his shot went over the head of the Webster goalkeeper and off the crossbar. WashU outshot Webster 10-1 in the opening half.
WashU added a much-needed insurance goal in the 83rd minute after junior Ben Strozewski made a hustle play to keep the ball in play on the end line. Strozewski then sent a cross in that junior Marc VandenBerg headed home to the near corner. The goal for VandenBerg was his first of the season.
WashU outshot Webster 21-4, and had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
WashU closes out a three-game homestand against Illinois Wesleyan University (1-2-1) on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Webster, 25-1-2 … Sproule has eight game-winning goals in his career … The Bears are unbeaten in their last six games dating back to last season.
