Box Score St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 15, 2017 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss on Senior Day to Carnegie Mellon University Sunday at Francis Field in St. Louis.
Prior to the game, WashU honored its seven seniors – Shadi Awad, Anthony Law, Kevin Maedomari, Colin McCune, Chris Rieger, Zach Virgilio and Andrew Zingone. The group has compiled an overall record of 37-19-10 in four seasons on the Danforth Campus.
Carnegie Mellon improved to 9-3-1, 2-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with the win, while WashU dropped to 7-4-1, 1-3 in the UAA.
WashU outshot Carnegie Mellon 12-10 in the opening half, but it was the Tartans who found the back of the net in the first half. Anthony Gulli converted a corner kick in the fourth minute that snuck through the defense and into the back of the net.
The Tartans added an unassisted goal in the 60th minute after Jamie Wheaton gathered a loose ball and fired a shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
WashU had its best scoring opportunity in the 57th minute on a point plank shot by Maedomari that was snagged by Alec Lam.
Freshman goalkeeper Bryant Hales (1-2) suffered the loss and made five saves. WashU outshot Carnegie Mellon 18-14, and the Tartans had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
WashU has a week off before hosting University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (8-3-4) in its final home game of the 2017 season on Sunday, Oct. 22, at Noon.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: Carnegie Mellon lead the all-time series 17-12-2, and the Tartans have won the last six meetings … The Bears are 5-2 at home this season.
