No. 12 Men's Soccer Blanks Illinois Wesleyan to Remain Perfect

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 23, 2016 – The No. 12-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team remained undefeated in the 2016 season with a 3-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan University Friday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU improved to 5-0 with the win, while Illinois Wesleyan fell to 3-4-1.

The shutout for WashU was its fifth of the season, and the Bears are the only team in NCAA Division III who have yet to allow a goal.

The Bears had the early 12-4 shot advantage in the first half, but it was IWU that had the best opportunity to score in the 27th minute. A header by Patrick Hickey was on its way to the back of the net after a cross into the box, but senior Grant Baltes cleared it off the line for a team save to keep the game scoreless.

In the 42nd minute, graduate student Jack West was taken down in the box that resulted in a penalty kick goal for graduate student Ike Witte. The goal for Witte was his first of the season and fourth of his career.

An own goal by Illinois Wesleyan in the 48th minute extended the lead to 2-0. Sophomore Eddie Wintergalen rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 88th minute on an assist from junior Nick Knight. The goal for Wintergalen was the first of his career.

Senior goalkeepers Nick Tannenbaum (45 minutes) and Daniel Geanon (45 minutes) combined to post the shutout in goal.

WashU outshot Illinois Wesleyan 19-4 and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

WashU returns to action Monday, Sept. 26, at Greenville College. Game time is 7 p.m.
