Greensboro, N.C., March 19, 2016 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's and women's swimming & diving teams combined for nine All-America finishes on the final day of the 2016 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships Saturday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, as both teams posted top-10 team finishes at the meet for the second year in a row.
The WashU women finished seventh with 146 points, while the men scored 161 points to place eighth. It marks the fifth time in school history that both teams posted top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, and the second year in a row. Emory University won the women's title with 560 team points, while Denison University was the men's team champion with 455.5 points.
Junior Michael Lagieski was the highest finisher for WashU Saturday. He broke his own school record by nearly a second to finish third in the 200 breaststroke for the second year in a row with a time of 1:58.82. Junior Reese Frerichs raced to All-America Honorable Mention honors in the event by finishing 14th in 2:02.87 after swimming a career-best time of 2:02.64 in the prelims.
After breaking the school record in the women's 200 backstroke prelims, sophomore Nicole Zanolli took another two-tenths of a second off the time in the finals. She finished sixth overall with a time of 2:00.03. Senior Katie Anderson also swam faster than her previous school-record time during the prelims (2:01.45) before earning All-America Honorable Mention accolades with a 13th-place finish in 2:01.70.
The women's 400-free relay team of junior MariMac Collins, senior Kristalyn McAfee, Zanolli and freshman Lauren Sapp placed seventh with a time of 3:27.00. Sophomore Ross Brown, senior Reed Dalton, freshman Andrew Pek and junior Justin Morrell swam to an eighth-place finish with a time of 3:01.66.
Senior Luke Dobben earned All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the men's 1,650 free. He clocked a time of 15:43.85 to pick up his third career All-America honor in the event. Brown raced to the first individual All-America honor of his career in the 100 free. He swam a career-best time of 45.11 to advance to the consolation final, before finishing 16th overall in 45.19. Senior Sophie Gan added All-America Honorable Mention honors for the WashU women in the 200 breaststroke, placing 15th in 2:20.96.
McAfee swam a season-best time of 51.98 to finish 30th in the women's 100 free, while Collins (52.20) and Sapp were 37th and 40th, respectively. Freshman Kevin Van Cleave finished 30th in the men's 200 backstroke in 1:51.23.
Overall, WashU had 26 All-America finishes at the NCAA Championships, including national titles by Dalton (men's 100 fly) and senior Amanda Stadermann (women's 200 fly). The Bears also set eight school records at the meet.
