Greensboro, N.C., March 17, 2016 – Washington University in St. Louis senior Reed Dalton repeated as the men's 100-yard butterfly National Champion to highlight six All-America performances for the men's and women's swimming & diving teams on day two of the 2016 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Dalton became the second swimmer in WashU history to win back-to-back National Championships, joining Alex Beyer, who won the men's 400 individual medley in 2009 and 2010. After swimming the fastest prelim time in the 100 fly Thursday morning, Dalton swam a season-best time of 47.22 to win the national title by a half-second. He finished his career with four top-four finishes in the event, after placing fourth each of his first two seasons.
Senior Amanda Stadermann broke the school record in the women's 100 fly final, finishing fourth with a time of 54.95, which was more than .75 of a second better than her previous career-best. It was Stadermann's second individual All-America honor of her career, and first in the 100 fly.
The men's 200-free relay team of sophomore Ross Brown, Dalton, junior Michael Lagieski and junior Justin Morrell started the day by breaking the school record in the prelims, advancing to the championship final with a time of 1:21.66. That time bettered the previous record of 1:21.69 set in 2015. They finished seventh in the event final with a time of 1:22.06.
Senior Katie Anderson, freshman Lauren Sapp, senior Kristalyn McAfee and junior MariMac Collins teamed up to break the school record in the women's 200-free relay during Thursday's prelims with a time of 1:34.84, which was .02 ahead of the previous record set last season. They finished 10th overall for All-America honorable mention honors with a time of 1:34.90. Sophomore Nicole Zanolli, junior Sophie Gan, Stadermann and Sapp teamed up to finish 11th in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:48.55 in the consolation final.
McAfee added the fourth All-America honor of her career in the 200 free, finishing 13th with a time of 1:51.37. Collins swam a season-best 1:52.41 to finish 21st in the event. Sophomore Niamh O'Grady (56.46) and junior Lauren Carlos (56.81) finished 22nd and 24th, respectively, in the women's 100 fly for the Bears.
A pair of freshmen also raced in the men's 100 fly, Andrew Pek finished 29th (49.85) and Brandon Lum was 41st (50.66). Morrell and senior Luke Dobben both raced in the men's 200 free. Morrell finished 35th in 1:41.14, while Dobben clocked a season-best 1:41.53 to finish 40th.
At the midway point of the meet, the WashU men sit in eighth in the team standings with 85 points, while the women's team is 12th with 59 points. Kenyon College (272.5) and Denison University (258) lead the men's team race, while Emory University (270) and Kenyon (268) are the top two teams in the women's standings.
WashU will have 10 individuals and two relays in action on the third day of the NCAA Championships Friday. The Bears will have at least one competitor in each of the eight swimming events of the day – 200 fly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 800-free relays. Prelims get underway at 10 a.m. (ET), with finals beginning at 5 p.m. (ET).
