WashU Men Add Three UAA Championships Friday

Webster, N.Y., Feb. 19, 2016 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's and women's swimming & diving teams added three more conference titles and nine all-UAA finishes on day three of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships hosted by the University of Rochester Friday at the Webster Aquatic Center.

Entering the final day of competition, the WashU men are second in the team standings with 967 points. Emory University continues to lead with 1,096.5. The WashU women have scored 890.5 points and sit in third place behind Emory (1,349) and the University of Chicago (940).

Senior Reed Dalton won his second consecutive UAA title in the men's 100 butterfly with a B-cut time of 48.31. The Bears had three of the top-four finishers in the event as freshmen Andrew Pek (49.86) and Brandon Lum (49.88) placed third and fourth, respectively.

Junior Michael Lagieski also won an individual event for WashU Friday. He clocked a B-cut time of 54.64 to win the 100 breaststroke by 1.6 seconds, his second career UAA title in the event. Junior Reese Frerichs also posted a B-cut, placing seventh in 57.44. Frerichs had a season-best and B-cut time of 56.87 in the prelims.

Freshman Kevin Van Cleave, Lagieski, Dalton and sophomore Ross Brown teamed up to win the 200-medley relay in the first event of the night with a B-cut time of 1:30.23. Van Cleave added a fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.15.

The women's 200-medley relay team of sophomore Nicole Zanolli, senior Sophie Gan and juniors Lauren Carlos and MariMac Collins broke the school record Friday night. They earned all-UAA honors with a third-place finish in a B-cut time of 1:44.31, which bettered the previous WashU record of 1:45.48 set earlier this season.

Zanolli added all-UAA honors in the 400 IM, finishing third in a B-cut time of 4:27.75 after clocking a season-best of 4:27.71 in the prelims. Sophomore Alissa Ling also posted a B-cut in the prelims with a time of 4:35.33. Freshman Maggie Cox also posted a B-cut time of 4:36.40 in the C final of the 400 IM. Gan also finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.14.

Senior Kristalyn McAfee finished as the runner-up in the women's 200 free with a season-best and B-cut time of 1:51.30. Collins finished sixth in 1:53.60. Senior Amanda Stadermann swam to all-UAA honors in the 100 fly with a season-best and B-cut time of 55.73, while Carlos was sixth in a B-cut time of 56.87 after posting a season-best 56.74 in the prelims. Sophomore Niamh O'Grady added a season-best and B-cut time of 57.02 in the prelims of the 100 fly.

Zanolli, McAfee and Collins also teamed with junior Erin Polries to finish as the runner-up in the 800-free relay with a B-cut time of 7:32.89. The men's 800-free relay team of Pek, junior Andrew Ellison, sophomore Wending Zhu and junior Justin Morrell just missed all-UAA honors with a fourth-place finish in a B-cut time of 6:48.31. Morrell was also sixth in the 200 free (1:41.96).

Freshman Jordan Wheeler placed fifth in the men's 400 IM with a season-best and B-cut time of 4:03.18. Senior Katie Anderson also had a B-cut time for WashU Friday. She placed seventh in the women's 100 back (57.48) after posting a B-cut time of 57.14 in the prelims.

The UAA Championships conclude Saturday with finals in the 1,650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400-free relay and men's one-meter diving. Prelims are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. (ET), with finals starting at 5:30 p.m. (ET).
