St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 23, 2016 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's and women's swimming & diving teams combined to win 19 of 26 events as the Bears swept their final home dual of the season against NCAA Division II Truman State University Saturday afternoon.
The WashU men won 11 events en route to a 143-77 victory over Truman State. The WashU women finished first in eight events to finish with a 138-93 win over the Bulldogs who were ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II.
Freshman Brandon Lum and senior Amanda Stadermann each posted B-cuts in the 200 butterfly to highlight the day for the Bears. Lum and freshman Jordan Wheeler placed first and second, respectively, in the men's 200 fly with times of 1:52.51 and 1:58.00. Stadermann clocked her B-cut in winning the women's 200 fly in 2:07.53.
Wheeler and Lum also teamed with junior Michael Lagieski and sophomore Ross Brown to win the 400-medley relay in 3:30.17. Staderman swam on the women's winning 400-medley relay, joining seniors Katie Anderson and Sophie Gan and freshman Lauren Sapp to win in 4:00.39. Gan (200 breaststroke – 2:25.08) and Sapp (100 free – 55.23) also won individual events for the WashU women. Lagieski was first in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.04) and second in the 50 free (22.27) behind sophomore TJ Dawson (21.91).
Junior Andrew Ellison won a pair of individual events for the WashU men. He finished first in the 200 freestyle in 1:45.39, to lead the Bears to the top seven spots in the race. Ellison added a first-place finish in the 500 free in 4:49.28. Senior Luke Dobben and freshman Kevin Van Cleave were the top-two finishers in the 1,000 free in 9:49.79 and 9:50.27, respectively. Van Cleave also finished first in the 200 backstroke in 1:57.38.
The WashU women also won both the 500 and 1,000 free events. Sophomore Alissa Ling swam to first in the 500 free in 5:16.86, while sophomore Nicole Zanolli was first in the 1,000 free in 10:38.55. Zanolli added a runner-up finish in the 200 backstroke in 2:09.68.
The men's 200-free relay team of Dawson, senior Reed Dalton, Brown and junior Justin Morrell finished first in a time of 1:26.31. The other four event victories for WashU came in the diving events. Junior Emily Ramos won the women's one-meter (229.12) and sophomore Laura Barber won the three-meter (243.97). Sophomore Ryan Nathenson won both the one-meter (230.17) and three-meter (205.65) events.
The WashU men's and women's swimming teams return to action with their final dual meet of the season Saturday, Jan. 30, at NCAA Division I Western Illinois University. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Macomb, Ill. The WashU divers will compete at the Principia Diving Invite hosted by Principia College Friday-Saturday, Jan. 29-30, in Elsah, Ill.
