Shenandoah, Texas, March 18, 2015 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's 200-medley relay team set a school record to highlight three All-America honorable mention performances for the swimming teams on the first day of the 2015 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships Wednesday at the CISD Natatorium.
The men's 200-medley relay team of senior Matt Nutter, sophomore Michael Lagieski, junior Reed Dalton and sophomore Justin Morrell clocked a time of 1:29.78 in the consolation final Wednesday night to finish 10th overall and earn All-America honorable mention honors. The time was nearly 0.4 of a second faster than the same group's own school record of 1:30.19 set at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships Feb. 13.
Senior Sara Taege also earned All-America honorable mention honors Wednesday. After clocking a season-best time of 4:55.29 in the 500 freestyle prelims, she swam to an 11th-place finish in 4:55.97. It marks Taege's fourth straight All-America finish in the event, who placed seventh in 2012, 13th in 2013 and eighth in 2014. Freshman Nicole Zanolli also competed in the 500 free for WashU, finishing tied for 24th with a season-best time of 5:00.44 in the prelims.
Freshman Niamh O'Grady swam a season-best time of 2:04.88 to advance to the consolation final of the women's 200 individual medley. She finished 16th in the event with a time of 2:06.44 in the final to earn the first All-America honorable mention honor of her career. Juniors Kristalyn McAfee (2:06.21) and Amanda Stadermann (2:08.82) also clocked season-best times in the 200 IM prelims to finish 22nd and 35th, respectively.
The women's 200-medley relay team of junior Katie Anderson, sophomore Claire Savage, O'Grady and sophomore MariMac Collins earned the final qualifying spot for the consolation final with a prelim time of 1:45.65, but the team was disqualified in the final.
The WashU men also had five individuals compete in Wednesday's prelims. Sophomore Andrew Ellison (4:33.92) and senior Zane Turpin (4:34.33) finished 19th and 22nd in the men's 500 free. Dalton clocked a career-best time of 20.79 to finish tied for 29th in the 50 free, while Morrell was 31st in 20.80. Lagieski also swam in the 200 IM, but was disqualified in the prelims.
The 10th-place finish in the 200-medley relay gave the WashU men 14 team points, landing them in 18th in the team standings after four events. The WashU women sit in 26th after five events with seven team points.
Nine individuals and four relays are scheduled to compete for WashU Thursday. The men's and women's 200-free and 400-medley relays will both be in action. In addition, six individuals – Taege and Zanolli in the 400 IM, O'Grady and Stadermann in the 100 butterfly, and McAfee and Collins in the 200 free – will compete for the WashU women on day two. Turpin (400 IM), Dalton (100 butterfly) and Ellison (200 free) will also each compete in their second individual events of the meet for the WashU men Thursday. Prelims begin at 10 a.m., with finals starting at 6 p.m.
