Wheaton, Ill., Dec. 5, 2015 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's and women's swimming teams posted 41 B-cut times over two days as the Bears swept the team titles at the Wheaton Invitational Friday-Saturday.
The WashU women won 12 events to score 1,171 team points at the meet, winning the team championship over host Wheaton College (658). The WashU men finished with 11 event victories and 1,151 points to claim the team title by more than 465 points over University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (683.5).
Two individuals set school records for the WashU women at the meet. Senior Katie Anderson clocked a B-cut time of 2:01.79 in the 200 backstroke prelims to break a seven-year-old school record set by Meredith Nordbrock (2:01.97) in 2008. Anderson placed first in the championship final of the event in 2:03.78.
Senior Amanda Stadermann broke her own record in the 200 butterfly with a B-cut time of 2:03.42 in the prelims. She led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Bears in the championship final with a time of 2:04.60. Senior Toireasa Rafferty-Millett also had a B-cut of 2:06.82 in the prelims, before finishing second in the finals with a time of 2:08.57. Junior Lauren Carlos was third in 2:08.87.
Anderson, senior Sophie Gan, Carlos and junior MariMac Collins teamed up to break their own record in the 200-medley relay with a winning B-cut time of 1:45.48. The men's 200-medley relay team of freshman Kevin Van Cleave, junior Michael Lagieski, senior Reed Dalton and junior Justin Morrell also set a school record with a B-cut time of 1:29.71 during a time trial Saturday afternoon. Lagieski also equaled his own school record in the 100 breaststroke with a winning B-cut time of 54.10.
The Bears return to action Saturday, Jan. 9, when they host the WU Invitational. Events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at WashU's Millstone Pool.
