Swimming & Diving Competes Against UIndy, Lewis in Final Dual

Indianapolis, Ind., Jan. 24, 2015 – The Washington University in St. Louis women's swimming & diving team won five events as the Bears split duals against NCAA Division II opponents University of Indianapolis and Lewis University Saturday afternoon. The Washington U. men were edged by both teams in its double dual.

Swimming in their fourth dual in the last nine days, the Washington U. women defeated Lewis 191-94, but fell to UIndy 157-133. The Washington U. men lost to UIndy 199.5-90.5 and fell 170-117 against Lewis in their third dual in the last eight days.

Juniors Amanda Stadermann and Toireasa Rafferty-Millett finished first and second in the women's 200 butterfly with times of 2:10.70 and 2:13.89, respectively. The Bears also got a 1-2 finish in the 500 freestyle as freshman Nicole Zanolli (5:10.13) and senior Sara Taege (5:16.77) took the top two spots in the event. Freshman Fiona Hon won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.47, while senior Hannah Chase placed third in 1:02.47.

Freshman Laura Barber scored 219.10 points to win the one-meter diving event. The Bears' final first-place finish came in the 200-free relay, where sophomore MariMac Collins, junior Kristalyn McAfee, junior Katie Anderson and freshman Niamh O'Grady teamed up to win in 1:39.36. O'Grady added a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:01.10) and placed third in the 200 individual medley (2:15.20).

Junior Reed Dalton provided the top finish of the day for the Washington U. men, placing second in the 100 butterfly in 50.94. Sophomore Grigg Schneider (2:03.41) placed third in the 200 IM, while junior Kevin Hays was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.78). Sophomore Justin Morrell, sophomore Reese Frerichs, Dalton and freshman Ross Brown teamed up to finish third in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:35.55.

Anderson, Collins, McAfee and junior Sophie Gan each posted runner-up finishes for the Washington U. women. Anderson was second in the 200 backstroke (2:11.16), Collins placed second in the 200 free (1:56.20), McAfee took second in the 50 free (25.29), and Gan finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.92). Sophomore Lauren Carlos placed third in the 100 free in 56.14, while sophomore Erin Polries added a third-place finish in the 1,000 free (10:51.08). Washington U. also had a third-place finish in the 200-medley relay as O'Grady, Gan, Carlos and Hon teamed up to clock a time of 1:52.78. 

The Washington U. men's and women's swimming & diving teams return to action in 18 days when they travel to Atlanta for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships hosted by Emory University Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 11-14.
