Swimming Teams Top Lindenwood-Belleville, Fall to Lindenwood

Maryland Heights, Mo., Jan. 23, 2015 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's and women's swimming & diving teams split their double duals against NCAA Division II Lindenwood University and Lindenwood University-Belleville Friday at Pattonville High School.

The Washington U. women defeated LU-Belleville 247-19. The Bears dropped the dual against Lindenwood 183-107. The WUSTL men also defeated LU-Belleville 213-49, but fell to Lindenwood 199-87.

Juniors Sophie Gan and Kristalyn McAfee each swam to first-place finishes at the meet for the Washington U. women. Gan won the 200 breaststroke in 2:22.18, while McAfee finished first in the 200 individual medley in 2:12.85. Gan and McAfee also teamed with junior Katie Anderson and sophomore Lauren Carlos to finish second in the 400-medley relay in a time of 4:00.88.

Sophomore Justin Morrell was part of three top-three finishes for the Washington U. men at the meet. He won the 50 freestyle by more than 0.7 of a second with a time of 21.10. Morrell (46.29) and freshman Ross Brown (48.46) finished second and third in the 100 free, respectively. They also joined freshman TJ Dawson and junior Kaisen Yao to finish second in the 400-free relay in 3:10.51.

Sophomore MariMac Collins posted a pair of third-place finishes for the Washington U. women in the 1,000 free (10:46.72) and the 100 free (54.40). Collins also teamed with senior Sara Taege, and freshmen Niamh O'Grady and Fiona Hon to take second in the 400-free relay in 3:36.72. O'Grady added a second-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:11.72), while Hon took third in the 50 free (24.78). Taege (1:57.41) and sophomore Erin Polries (1:58.70) placed second and third, respectively, in the 200 free. Polries added a runner-up finish in the 500 free (5:13.02), while junior Amanda Stadermann finished third (5:19.62) in the event.

Sophomore Andrew Ellison added a pair of top-three finishes for the Washington U. men. He took second in the 500 free in 4:45.57, and was third in the 1,000 free with a season-best time of 9:47.06. Freshman Wending Zhu placed second in the 200 free in 1:47.62.

The Washington University men's and women's swimming & diving teams return to action with a double dual against NCAA Division II opponents University of Indianapolis and Lewis University Saturday, Jan. 24, in Indianapolis.
