St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 16, 2015 – Four individuals won events, but the Washington University in St. Louis women's swimming & diving team came up short against NCAA Division I Illinois State University 169-129 in a dual meet Friday night.
The Bears swept the top four spots in the 50 freestyle. Freshman Fiona Hon won the event with a time of 25.06, while sophomore MariMac Collins (25.22), junior Kristalyn McAfee (25.23) and sophomore Claire Savage (25.27) were second through fourth, respectively. Junior Amanda Stadermann led a 1-2-3 finish for Washington U. in the 200 butterfly, winning with a time of 2:08.20. Junior Toireasa Rafferty-Millett was second in 2:12.24 and sophomore Lauren Carlos took third in 2:13.72.
Freshman Niamh O'Grady and Carlos finished first and second in the 100 butterfly in 58.10 and 58.93, respectively. Stadermann was fourth in the event in 59.88. Freshman Nicole Zanolli provided the fourth first-place finish for the Bears, winning the 500 free in 5:15.80. Sophomore Erin Polries was second in 5:17.47. Zanolli (10:49.42) and Polries (10:51.11) also took second and third, respectively, in the 1,000 free.
O'Grady got edged by one-hundredth of a second in the 100 backstroke, finishing second in 59.30, while junior Katie Anderson was third in 1:00.29. Anderson added a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke in 2:12.08. McAfee also had a pair of runner-up finishes, taking second in the 100 free (53.76) and 200 free (1:56.41). Junior Sophie Gan was second in the 200 breastroke (2:27.75) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.01) for the Bears.
Washington U. also took second in both relays that were contested. Anderson, Gan, Carlos and Hon were second in the 200-medley relay in 1:50.31. O'Grady, McAfee, Collins and Savage teamed up to finish second in the 400-free relay in 3:33.66.
The Washington U. men's and women's swimming & diving teams will travel to Carbondale, Ill., Saturday, Jan. 17, to take on two more NCAA Division I teams, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, in a double dual at 1 p.m.
