Box Score St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 23, 2014 – Senior forward Lillie Toaspern scored a goal in the fourth minute to become the fifth member of the 100-point club as the No. 1-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team posted a 5-0 win over Principia College Tuesday night at Francis Field in St. Louis.
Toaspern, the reigning Disney Soccer/National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III and University Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Week, has five goals and seven assists for a team-high 17 points this season. She ranks fifth in school history in assists (29) and points (101), sixth in goals (37) and seventh in game-winning goals (nine).
Washington U. improved to 8-0 with the win, while Principia dropped to 1-7. The Bears are one of 15 undefeated teams left in NCAA Division III, and are unbeaten in the their last 23 games dating back to the 2013 season.
The Bears face their stiffest competition of the 2014 season Saturday, Sept. 27, when No. 10-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) visits Francis Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Wheaton has a 7-1 overall record in 2014, and have handed Washington U. its last four losses dating back to the 2011 season.
Toaspern got things going for Washington U. in the fourth minute as she took a pass from junior Anna Sippel and fired a shot from just inside the 18 to make it 1-0. The goal for Toaspern was her fifth of the season and 37th of her career. Senior Tessa Delaney finished a short corner kick from sophomore Lexie Sprague in the 15th minute with a left-footed shot to push the lead to 2-0. The goal for Delaney was the first of her career.
Sophomore Katie Chandler (35:36) and freshmen Megan Wolf (38:33) and Allison Cerny (44:09) added goals late in the first half to round out the scoring for Washington University.
Washington U. outshot Principia 24-6 and had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Bears were also called for 12 off sides. Sophomore goalkeeper Lizzy Crist made one save in 67:15 to pick up her sixth win of the season, while sophomore Nina Gerson made one save in the final 22:45. Gerson made a phenomenal save on a point-blank shot by Nadine Marczi in the 78th minute to preserve the seventh shutout of the season for Washington U.
