Box Score St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 15, 2014 – The No. 13-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team had its season come to an end with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to No. 25 University of Puget Sound in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Championship Saturday afternoon at Francis Field in St. Louis.
Washington U. ends its season with a 13-4-2 overall record, while Puget Sound improves to 16-4. The Loggers take on the winner of No. 14 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Centre College Sunday at 1 p.m. in the second round.
Senior Robin Viera scored the game-winning goal in the 90th minute after heading home a cross from junior Danielle Silver. The goal for Viera was her team-leading ninth of the season.
Neither team had a good scoring chance in the first half as Washington U. head a 5-3 advantage in shots. The Bears' lone shot on goal in the first half was a header by senior Lillie Toaspern in the 29th minute.
Washington U. had a pair of scoring opportunities in the 61st minute. Toaspern's point blank shot was stopped by Puget Sound goalkeeper Lauren Thomas and deflected out of bounds, and then junior Sam Ezratty was left open on the corner but her header went just right.
With the Bears controlling play in the second half, sophomore Katie Chandler nearly broke the tie in the 83rd minute with a shot from 30 yards out that went off the crossbar.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lizzy Crist (10-4-2) took the loss in the net making one save. The Bears outshot Puget Sound 12-8 and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. is 17-2-2 all-time at home in the NCAA Tournament … The Bears were making their ninth-consecutive and 14th overall NCAA Tournament appearance with a 24-12-6 all-time mark … Washington U.'s senior class of Kaylin Balley, Tessa Delaney, Tessa Klumpp and Toaspern led the Bears to a 70-12-4 (.837) overall record in their four seasons, the winningest class in school history.
