Men's Soccer Dominates Principia in 4-0 Win

St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 23, 2014 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team scored four goals in the final 48 minutes to earn a 4-0 win over Principia College Thursday night at Francis Field.

In the second minute, a long pass for Washington U. found freshman Andrew Zingone, but his shot went just wide of the right post. The Panthers made a quick counter-attack and got their best scoring opportunity of the half, but the shot from 35-yards out was easily saved by sophomore Daniel Geanon. The Bears had five corner kick in the first 20 minutes, but were unable to take advantage. In the 11th minute, a corner kick by junior Cole Davis went to freshman Shadi Awad on the far side of the box, but his header was headed out by a Principia defender standing at the front of the goal.

The Bears picked up the tempo of the game in the final 10 minutes of the first half, and in the 38th minute, junior Jack West was taken down just outside the box. Senior Randy Gartside found the back of the net after the Bears' free kick, but the ref waved the goal off because he had not blown his whistle on the restart. After another restart, freshman Chris Rieger had a shot blocked to give the Bears a corner kick. West found Awad in the box, but his header hit the crossbar and bounced out, and the Panthers were able to clear.

Washington U. kept the pressure on, and senior Jonathan Lipsey made a pass out to the left side of the field for sophomore Noah Lieberman, who crossed into West. West received the ball with his back to the net, but made a quick turn to his left and fired a shot into the right corner for his team-leading sixth goal of the season to make it 1-0 in favor of the Bears in the 43rd minute.

The Bears dominated the second half, scoring three goals to finish with the 4-0 victory. West was taken down near the end line in the box in the 60th minute to give the Bears their seventh penalty kick opportunity of the season. Lipsey converted the PK to make the score 2-0. In the 70th minute, Lipsey made a pass through the Principia defense to West, who chipped a shot over the keeper for his second goal of the game to make it 3-0. Washington U. continued to be aggressive offensively, and in the 85th minute, sophomore Sam Nadell scored the first goal of his career on a header to the left side of the net after a shot by sophomore Jake Shapiro was deflected out by the Principia goalkeeper.

Washington U. finished with a 26-6 shot advantage, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Geanon tallied two saves and improved to 4-4-1 with the win, while playing just more than 82 minutes. Senior David Wang played the final 7:55 in goal for the Bears, and did not face any shots.

Washington University (7-5-2) returns to action with the first of three home matches to end the regular-season Friday, Oct. 31. The Bears host No. 3 Brandeis University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) match beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Francis Field.
