St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 14, 2014 - The Washington University in St. Louis men's and women's swimming & diving teams combined to win 22 of 26 events contested as the Bears swept their duals at Principia College Friday night.
The Washington U. women won all 13 events on their way to a dominating 202-32 win over Principia, while the WUSTL men also won by more than 100, finishing with a 169-57 victory.
Senior Chi Pham, junior Sara Taege and freshman Emily Ramos each won a pair of individual events for the WUSTL women. Pham won the 100 butterfly (1:00.67) and 100 breaststroke (1:09.20), while Taege finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:13.84) and 100 freestyle (53.86). Ramos won both diving events, scoring 207.00 in the one-meter and 192.80 in the three-meter. Pham also teamed with fellow seniors Kara Gordon, Claire Guo and Grace Murray to win the 200-medley relay in 1:57.79.
Junior Luke Dobben was a double winner for the Washington U. men, swimming a season-best time of 51.67 to win the 100 butterfly, and taking first in the 200 individual medley in 1:58.36. Freshmen Andrew Ellison (100 free – 50.77), Reese Frerichs (500 free – 4:55.96), Michael Lagieski (1,000 free – 10:27.04) and Matt Liu (100 backstroke – 54.71), and senior Jason Wan (200 free – 1:50.06) also won individual events for the Washington U. men.
The Bears also finished first in both men's relays. Sophomores Luke Duschl, Reed Dalton, Kaisen Yao and RJ Petrella won the 200-medley relay in 1:37.80. Senior Brian Carpenter, freshman Paul Huang, junior Jacob Hale and junior Michael Postetter teamed up to win the 200-free relay in 1:31.55.
The other five individual winners for the WUSTL women were freshman MariMac Collins (1,000 free – 10:54.51), sophomore Sophie Gan (1:58.36), sophomore Kristalyn McAfee (50 free – 24.84), sophomore Toireasa Rafferty-Millett (100 backstroke – 1:03.67), and sophomore Amanda Stadermann (500 free – 5:21.14). Stadermann, McAfee, junior Katie Crist and Gan added a first-place finish in the 200-free relay (1:42.00).
The Washington University women's swimming & diving team is back in action Saturday, Jan. 18, at NCAA Division I Illinois State University. The dual is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Bloomington, Ill.
