Women's Swimming Tops SLU, Men Fall in Season Opener

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 27, 2013 – The Washington University in St. Louis women's swimming and diving team opened the season with a 129.5-104.5 victory over NCAA Division I Saint Louis University, while the Billiken men earned a 132-95 win over the Bears in the season opener Friday evening at Millstone Pool.

The win for the WUSTL women was the first over SLU since Nov. 19, 1990, when the Bears earned a 123-110 victory. The Washington U. women won six of the 13 events contested at the meet, while sophomore Luke Dobben and freshman Michael Lagieski were the lone event winners for the WUSTL men. Washington U. returns to action at the Show-Me Showdown Friday, Oct. 4, in Columbia, Mo.

Sophomore Kristalyn McAfee won all three events in which she competed in the meet, including a pair of individual events. She clocked a time of 54.17 to win the 100 freestyle, and led off the winning 200-freestyle relay (1:40.73) that also included senior Allison Siegel, and freshmen MariMac Collins and Claire Savage. Freshman Jackie Marlin, junior Katie Crist, sophomore Grace Counts and junior Sara Taege teamed up to place second in the 200-free relay (1:42.07).

McAfee led Washington U. to four of the top-five places in the 200 freestyle, winning the race with a time of 1:56.29. Counts (1:57.58) finished as the runner-up, while sophomore Toireasa Rafferty-Millett and freshman Erin Polries place fourth and fifth with times of 2:00.94 and 2:01.09, respectively.

Sophomore Hannah Lillioja was the sixth event winner for the WUSTL women, claiming first in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.47 to lead a 1-2-3 sweep for the Bears. Sophomore Katie Anderson (1:01.77) and senior Chi Pham (1:02.18) finished second and third, respectively. Savage won her first collegiate individual title, finishing first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25:24. Taege finished first in the 500-freestyle (5:13.38), while Counts (5:18.76) and Polries (5:24.64) placed third and fourth, respectively.

Dobben placed first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:45.87, while freshman Paul Huang was second in 4:49.05. Lagieski won the 100 breaststroke in 59.81. Dobben added a third-place finish in the 200 free (1:45.79) while Huang finished as the runner-up in 1:45.23. Dobben and Huang teamed up with senior Tyler Perez and freshman Eric Chao to place third in the 200-free relay (1:29.90).The Bears also finished second in the race (1:28.21) with the team of sophomores Reed Dalton, Kaisen Yao and RJ Petrella, and junior Matt Nutter.
