Box Score

St. Louis, Mo., Aug. 30, 2013 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team erased a 1-0 deficit at halftime with three second-half goals as the Bears posted a 3-1 victory over Central College (Iowa) in the 2013 season opener for both teams at Francis Field in St. Louis.

Washington U. dominated play for most of the first half, outshooting Central College 12-2 in the opening 45 minutes of play. The two shots though for the Dutch were off the head of junior Aleksandar Glavas, who capitalized on a cross from freshman Adelmo Marchiori IV at the 41:42 mark for the lone goal of the first half.

Trailing 1-0 in the second half, a misplay by a Central defender resulted in a goal by senior Michael Flowers at the 54:06 mark to tie the game. Flowers' goal gave the Bears some momentum, and 14 minutes later the Bears took the lead for good. Junior Jonathan Lipsey made a long pass that slipped through the Central defense to freshman Jake Shapiro, who fired a shot that went off the far post into the net to make it 2-1. The goal for Shapiro was the first of his career.

Washington U. got a much-need insurance goal at 77:03 after senior Manny Angel buried a long pass from freshman Nick Politan to the far corner to push the lead to 3-1. The goal for Angel was his first with the Red and Green after playing three seasons at Hiram College.
