GRANVILLE, Ohio – The No. 13 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team saw the team portion of its season come to an end on Sunday in the third round of the NCAA Tournament, as the Bears fell to No. 4 and regional host Denison, 4-1, in Granville.
The Big Red narrowly picked up the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead.
No. 10 senior
Colin Fox and first-year
Jeremy Sieben fell 6-2 to No. 4 Ethan Green and Kael Shah at the top spot. WashU then leveled the match when senior
Colin Scruggs and first-year
Ethan Wu claimed a 6-4 win over Andreas Chapides and Nick Meyers at No. 3 doubles.
The doubles point came down to No. 2, where junior
Nathan Tam and sophomore
Drew Koval dropped a heartbreaker, 7-5, to Wesley Huang and Jacob Patterson.
Denison took a quick 2-0 lead when Patterson picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over senior
Case Fagan at No. 3 singles. Sieben then got the Bears on the board with his 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 5 Shah at No. 2 singles.
The Big Red then clinched the match when Anthony Payiavlas won 6-3, 6-1 over Wu at No. 6 singles and No. 31 Meyers won 6-3, 6-3 over Koval at No. 5 singles. The three remaining singles matches at Nos. 1, 2, and 4 went unfinished.
WashU will now look toward the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Championships, which will be held May 23-26 at the Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. Scruggs earned a spot in the singles draw while the duo of Fox and Sieben earned a spot in the doubles tournament.
The draw for the singles and doubles championships will be conducted by the men's tennis committee and will be released on May 22, not before 1 p.m. ET.
