PREVIEW: No. 13 WashU Men's Tennis Opens NCAA Play Saturday

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The No. 13 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team will open NCAA play this weekend as the Bears travel to Denison for a regional beginning on Friday, May 8.

The Bears will have a first round bye before facing No. 28 Kalamazoo in the second round on Saturday, May 9 at 1:30 p.m. ET. The other second round match will feature No. 4 and defending national champion Denison and the winner of No. 25 Carthage and No. 64 Illinois Tech.

About the Bears – Schedule / Roster / Stats
WashU enters the postseason ranked No. 13 in the most recent ITA rankings. The Bears have a dual match record of 13-9 and finished sixth in the UAA.

Also in the latest ITA rankings, senior Colin Scruggs is ranked No. 24 in the singles with a 12-7 record against Div. III opponents. In doubles, the pair of senior Colin Fox and first-year Jeremy Sieben are ranked No. 10 with an 11-5 record, mostly at the number one doubles spot.

Earlier this week, the UAA announced that Fox and Sieben earned a spot on the First Team All-UAA at No. 1 doubles while sophomore Avi Mahajan was named to the Second Team All-UAA at No. 4 singles.

WashU earned a first round bye and faces off against the No. 28 Kalamazoo Hornets in the second round on Saturday, May 9 at 1:30 p.m. ET.

About No. 4 Denison – Schedule / Roster / Stats
Denison enters the NCAA Tournament ranked No. 4 in the latest ITA rankings. The Big Red have a dual match record of 25-2 overall after defeating No. 10 Kenyon in the NCAC Championship, 4-0.

The two losses came in back-to-back matches at the ITA Indoor Championships against, at the time, No. 2 Chicago, 4-3 and No. 5 Case Western Reserve, 4-3.

In singles, the Big Red have No. 5 Kael Shalin Shah, No. 14 Ethan Green, No. 30 Nicholas Meyers, and No. 31 Andreas Chapides. Over on the doubles side of things, Denison has No. 4 Green and Shalin Shah.
The Big Red earned a first round bye and await the winner No. 25 Carthage and No. 64 Illinois Tech on Saturday, May 9 at 11 a.m. ET.

About No. 25 Carthage – Schedule / Roster / Stats
Carthage is 22-3 overall entering the tournament, ranked No. 25 in the latest ITA rankings. The Firebirds earned their spot after claiming the CCIW title with a 4-1 win over No. 37 and top-seeded North Central.

Four members of the Carthage men's tennis team were recognized in the 2026 All-CCIW awards. The Firebirds were highlighted by Francisco Silveira, who was named the 2026 CCIW Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Year along with First Team honors. Others who earned an all-conference nod included Diego Silva (First Team), Finn Morris (Second Team), and Victor Pimenta (RESPECT Award).

Carthage will take on No. 64 Illinois Tech in the First Round on Friday, May 8 at 12 p.m. ET

About No. 28 Kalamazoo – Schedule / Roster / Stats
Kalamazoo comes into the tournament with a 15-5 overall record and ranked number 31 in the latest rankings after claiming the MIAA Tournament title with a 4-1 over No. 56 Hope in the championship.

The Hornets' Cameron Crosby was recently named MIAA Men's Tennis Most Valuable Player, among three that earned All-MIAA recognition. Along with Crosby, Alex Fleming earned First Team honors, while Derek Blackwell claimed a spot on the Second Team.

Kalamazoo earned a first round bye and will face No. 13 WashU in the second round on Saturday, May 9 at 1:30 p.m. ET.

About No. 64 Illinois Tech – Schedule / Roster / Stats
The Scarlet Hawks enter the NCAA tournament with a 14-5 overall record after claiming the NACC tournament title in a 4-3 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering in the championship match. Illinois Tech is ranked No. 64 in the most recent ITA poll.

Tanay Sharma led five players for Illinois Tech on the All-NACC all-conference teams. Sharma was named both the Freshman and Player of the Year while earning all-conference honors in both singles and doubles. Caro-Accino Roca and Alexander Feher both earned all-conference honors in both singles and doubles while Dueso Guell was selected for singles and Hozumi Tada was chosen for doubles.

Illinois Tech will face No. 25 Carthage in the First Round on Friday, May 8 at 12 p.m. ET.

The 2026 Championship
The championship provides for a 44-team tournament. Automatic qualification (AQ) is granted to 35 conference champions. The remaining nine teams will be selected from true independents, schools from conferences that do not have an automatic bid for their champions, and teams in conferences with an automatic bid that did not win their conferences AQ (At-Large). 

The teams will play a single-elimination tournament with the first, second and third-rounds played at regional sites, Friday-Sunday, May 8-10, or Thursday-Saturday, May 7-9. University of the South and Chattanooga, TN in Chattanooga, Tennessee will host the team championships finals, which will be held May 19-22 at Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
