KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team returned to the courts this weekend in Michigan, taking on the best in the region at the ITA Fall Regional, hosted by Kalamazoo.
On Friday, two rounds of singles and two rounds of doubles were completed, with every WashU singles player and doubles team still in action.
In singles, all four Bears competing had secured byes in the first round. Senior
Case Fagan picked up a straight-sets win over Max Fickas of Otterbein in the round of 64, 6-1, 6-2. He will next take on top-seeded Kael Shalin Shah of Denison in the round of 32 on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Classmate
Eric Kuo secured a 6-2, 6-4 win over Scott Anderson of DePauw in the round of 64. He will next take on Matthew Liew of Chicago in the round of 32 on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
In senior
Colin Fox's first match in the round of 64, he defeated Santiago Diaz of Augustana in a third-set, match tiebreak, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (6). He next faces Jacob Patterson of Denison on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
The fourth WashU senior,
Colin Scruggs, was forced into a tiebreak in his first set but settled in for the 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Henry Ros of North Central in the round of 64. He will next face JT Bilski of Case Western Reserve on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
In doubles, the first-year duo of
Jeremy Sieben and
Ethan Wu had a bye in their round of 64 before they took care of Rodrigo Alipio and Mario Neto of Calvin, 8-2, to advance to the round of 16 on Saturday at 8 a.m. They will take on Rafael Rin and Augusto Ghidini of Wabash in their next match.
Fox and Fagan defeated the team of George Ciuca and Bernardo Aguiar of Lake Forest in their double match on Friday, 8-3, and will next face Paulo Pocasangre and Alejandro Gonzalez of Kenyon in the round of 16 at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
The duo of Kuo and Scruggs shut out Jade Dynamic and Francisco Trujillo Garcia of Greenville in their lone match of the day to set up a Saturday morning match with Shrikeshav Murugesan and Christian Liew of Chicago at 8 a.m.
