ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 17 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team heads to La Crosse, Wis. this weekend for the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 where the Bears will face off with No. 22 Wisconsin Lutheran on Friday at 4 p.m.
 
The Bears defeated Central College 82-75 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament and moved on to defeat Franklin College 83-54 in the second round.
 
Along with WashU and Wisconsin Lutheran, No. 5 UW-La Crosse will serve as the host team and face No. 9 Illinois Wesleyan. The winner of each game will play in Saturday's Elite 8 game at 7 p.m.

About the Bears – Schedule | Roster | Stats
This marks the program's 10th trip to the Sweet 16 and second in a row. During opening weekend, senior Hayden Doyle led the Bears wit 24 points and five assists against Central as well as 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists against Franklin. Senior Drake Kindsvater netted 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists against Central and posted a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds against Franklin. First-year Connor May finished with 14 points and four rebounds in both games while sophomore Jake Davis had a career-high 14 points in the win over Franklin.
 
Doyle leads the team this season with 17.4 points per game to go with 5.0 rebounds and a team-high 93 assists. Kindsvater is averaging 13.6 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game and has a team-high 37 steals. May is at 12.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game and has a team-high 17 blocks.
 
Scouting Wisconsin Lutheran – Schedule | Roster | Stats
Wisconsin Lutheran pulled off two upsets during opening weekend to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history. In the first round, WLC defeated No. 11 Calvin 73-61 before beating No. 2 UW-Platteville 75-73 in overtime in the second round. The Warriors enter the Sweet 16 with a 27-3 record and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after falling in the NACC Tournament Final.
 
WLC is led by Ryan Broeckel – who earned NACC Player of the Year for the third-straight year – with 18.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game as well as 56 blocks on the season. Jacob Stoltz is averaging 16.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game and has a team-high 75 steals. Grayson Goetz is at 15.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Stoltz was a second-team All-NACC selection while Goetz earned a spot on the first team.
 
Scouting UW-La Crosse – Schedule | Roster | Stats
This marks the first time in school history UW-La Crosse has made it to the Sweet 16. The Eagles beat Greenville in the opening round 120-93 before moving on to defeat St. Norbert 77-67 in the second round.
 
The Eagles are led by Sam Grieger with 15.6 points per game to go with 5.3 rebounds per game and a team-high 81 assists on the season. Dustin Derousseau is at 14.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game as well as a team-high 45 steals. JJ Paider is averaging 13.2 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game and Karter Thomas is at 11.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.
 
Derousseau, Paider and Grieger were all named to the All-WIAC First Team while Derousseau was also named to the WIAC All-Defensive Team.
 
Scouting Illinois Wesleyan – Schedule | Roster | Stats
The Titans advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2022 and enter the weekend with a 24-5 record. Last weekend, IWU defeated Bethany Lutheran 101-67 in the opening round and followed with an upset of No. 7 Saint John's, 75-73, in the second round.
 
Nick Roper leads the Titans with 15.6 points per game to go with 5.5 rebounds. Hakim Williams is at 10.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game and has a team-high 50 steals. Harrison Wilmsen is at 9.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game and Mason Funk is at 9.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Mark Anderson leads the team's rebounding efforts with 6.0 per game.
 
The Bears and IWU have three common opponents this season – Chicago, Webster and Carroll. The Titans beat all three teams while WashU defeated Webster and Carroll and fell twice to Chicago in UAA action. WashU and IWU also faced off in the regular season, with the Titans coming away with a 84-68 win.

The Bears have faced four teams that reached the NCAA Tournament – Illinois Wesleyan along with UAA foes Emory and NYU.
 
The 2025 Championship
The 64-team, single-elimination tournament consists of 43 automatic qualifiers and 21 at-large bids. The semifinals and championship will be held at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on March 20 and 22.
