RIVER FOREST, Ill./ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis played in two locations over the weekend with players competing in the River Forest Clay Court Collegiate as well as hosting duties of the WashU 1-Day Invite. The River Forest tournament saw WashU take on a field of Div. I teams.
River Forest Tournament –
The Bears sent six players to the tournament hosted by Northern Illinois.
Singles
Junior
Case Fagan dropped his opening match of the tournament then rebounded with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Artem Alekseychuk of Illinois-Chicago before finishing the bracket in sixth place. Sophomore
Nathan Tam opened the number three bracket with a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (5) win over Kristian Blagoev of Marquette and finished fourth. Finishing fifth in his bracket, senior
John Fakouri won his second match of the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sam Klein of Northern Illinois.
Much like Fakouri, sophomore
Daniel Radke finished fifth with a middle win over Teddy Wong of Marquette, 6-1, 7-6 (6). First-year
Avi Mahajan finished seventh in his bracket with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Michael Schut of Eastern Illinois.
Doubles
The duo of junior
Colin Scruggs and Fagan teamed up in the top doubles spot and opened up with a 7-6 (2) win over a team from Marquette and followed up with a 6-2 win over Eastern Illinois to advance to the final. After a long, tough day, the team fell in a tiebreak 7-6 (7) to team from Illinois State , finishing runner-up.
Tam and Radke teamed up and finished seventh with a 7-6, (1) win over Marquette.
WashU Invite –
The Bears hosted a one-day invite, playing a pair of doubles matches along with one round of singles.
WashU swept through all of six of their doubles matches with the teams of senior
Scott Yamamoto and junior
Eric Kuo, seniors
Pato Garcia Muriel and
Stefan Hester, with first-year
Drew Koval also playing doubles.
In singles, Hester and Garcia Muriel each picked up wins to wrap up the day.
